During a vacation trip to Warsaw, Indiana with Sylvia's parents, the family had a picnic by Webster Lake. After taking some pictures, Lawrence decided to go swimming, but tragically became tangled in seaweed and drowned while out in the lake. In an attempt to save Lawrence, George dove in after him, but not only was unable to rescue Lawrence, but tragically drowned as well. Sylvia and Mary Martha returned to Oak Park, Illinois to bury their husbands in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mary Martha stayed with Sylvia to help her raise Mary Ellen and Sylvia eventually remarried to pharmacist John E. Wood, having two sons John Jr. and George.
