Philip Pursan Vyvyan, 60, was an 18th-century English country gentleman and magistrate from an influential, aristocratic Cornish family. He lived his entire life in Cornwall, England, rooted deeply in the region's local governance and society.

He was the son of Richard Vyvyan (a barrister and Recorder of Launceston) and Philippa Piper (daughter of Hugh Pyper). Through his father, he was a grandson of Sir Richard Vyvyan, 2nd Baronet of Trelowarren. His brother was the Reverend Richard Vyvyan (Vivian) of Lamerton.

He married Mary Walter, daughter of Sheldon Walter, on 22 September 1766 at St. Paernus' Church in South Petherwin, Cornwall. Through his marriage to Mary Walter, he acquired the Tremeal estate in South Petherwin. Records show that he either completely rebuilt or significantly expanded and improved the manor house on this property. Philip and Mary had two sons and a daughter:

  • Vyell Vyvyan: His eldest son, who later inherited the wider family's primary baronetcy and estates (becoming the 7th Baronet of Trelowarren) after the passing of a cousin.

  • Francis Vyvyan: His second son, who married but left no heirs.

  • Harriot Vyvyan: His daughter, who married the prominent physician Dr. Stephen Luke.

Through his son Vyell, Philip was the grandfather of Sir Richard Rawlinson Vyvyan (8th Baronet), a famous 19th-century Member of Parliament, scientist, and early evolution theorist.

Philip served as a prominent local Justice of the Peace (magistrate) for Cornwall. Documented historical settlement examinations from the era, such as records from 1769, explicitly bear his name as the presiding justice administering legal oaths.

Philip Pursan Vyvyan died in March 1791 at Tresmarrow, Cornwall, England, at the age of 59.
