Funeral Service for Mrs. Rex (Bernice Ella) Nelson, 78, of Sisseton, SD, were held on February 8, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD, with the Rev. William Schruba officiating. Pallbearers were Dana, Tom and Evan Nelson, Alan Schmidt, Justin Tchida and Jerome Moshier. Honorary Pallbearers were Agnes Bubak, The Friendly Neighbors Extension Club, Mary Palleson, Elaine Chilson, Lillian Carlson, Pearl Krause, Susie Kempton and Beth Schmidt. Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Ella Bendickson was born on July 31, 1929 in Bosko Township, near Claire City, SD to Berndt and Elise (Throndson) Bendickson. Bernice was the youngest of six children. Bernice attended Bosko Twp. School by Claire City, SD, where she grew up. She was baptized as an adult on December 14, 1965 and was also confirmed at that time at the Grace Lutheran Church.

Bernice and Rex Nelson were married on March 31, 1948. Bernice and Rex lived and farmed in Goodwill Twp. Bernice's passion was collecting recipes. No matter what drawer or shelf you looked in, she had recipes. She also was able to find any recipe you asked for. She had her "own" filing system! Gardening was also her greatest joy. She had a huge garden every year and would share her produce with family and friends. Bernice worked for many years at Chef's Café, Mobile Café and The Cenex C-Store. Bernice was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Extension Club for over 45 years and was a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in Sisseton.

Bernice passed away on February 5, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen, SD after a nine-year battle with cancer.

Bernice is survived by her husband, Rex Nelson of Sisseton, SD; her children, Mrs. Rhonda McKee of Sturgis, SD, Marlin Nelson of New Effington, SD, James Nelson of Aniak, AK and Dana (Laurie) Nelson of Lake City, SD; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Cora Dempsey of Sisseton, SD; and her brother, Kermit (Marion) Bendickson of Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Berndt and Elise Bendickson; her brothers, Theodore and Milton Bendickson; a sister, Christine Dempsey; and her son-in-law, Gary McKee.
