He was later promoted Sergeant, and was captured at Fredericksburg on 3 May 1863. He was eventually released, and was paroled in Richmond on 22 April 1865.

After the War, he served as a Richmond police captain, and as a merchant in Hanover County. He and his wife Sarah had at least four children: James, Claiborne, Henry and John.
