OBITUARY

MRS. SARAH A. BURCH

Mrs. Sarah A. Burch passed away suddenly from apoplexy, at the home of her son, Edgar L. Woodworth, 134 Gold St., Utica, last Thursday evening, at six o'clock. The news of her sudden demise caused genuine sorrow among her many lifelong acquaintances in this village and vicinity, in which her life of nearly 84 years had been spent.

Sarah Ann Hills, third daughter of James and Chloe Clarke Hills, was born in this village Dec. 15, 1840. She was a student in the Brookfield Academy in the early days of that institution, and at the age of 17 years was married to George E. Woodworth. Both for many years were identified with the religious, social and business life of the community, and their home was one that reflected cheer and good fellowship in an unusual degree. Mr. Woodworth passed away in 1894. Five years later she was married to Courtland N. Burch, whose death occurred in 1904, their married life having been spent on the Burch homestead near Button Falls. Since that time Mrs. Burch had resided here except that for several winters she had made her home with her son in Utica. In the present year, from June until mid-November, she had enjoyed her home here and the association with her many old-time friends, being physically able to go about the neighborhood. With faculties unimpaired, she took interest not only in the problems of the community, but in affairs political and of world import. In earlier life she was, with her husband, a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in its welfare, but after the death of her companion she affiliated with the Seventh Day Baptist Church and had been most faithful in service, earnest in devotion and practical and consistent in the performance of Christian duties. Neighborly and sociable as she had always been, even in advanced years, she will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends.

She is survived by her son, E. L. Woodworth, her one other child, Minnie, dying in childhood. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. J. F. Hickox of Oneida and Mrs. E. A. Beebe of Candor; also an adopted daughter, Mrs. Clara Stoddard, of Flushing, L. I. The funeral service was held from the Seventh Day Baptist Church in this village Saturday at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. F. F. Peterson of Leonardsville. The burial was in our village cemetery.

Brookfield [NY] Courier, Wed. Dec. 7, 1898:

—Courtland N. Burch of this place and Mrs. Sarah A. Woodworth, formerly of Brookfield, were united in marriage at Adams, N. Y., on Thursday, Dec. 1. The ceremony was performed by Rev. R. J. Thompson, who…many years pastor of the First Baptist church of Brookfield. Mr. and Mrs. Burch will reside in this village and will be at home after Dec. 15. They are both well known and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends, who tender sincere congratulations upon their marriage. Some years ago Mrs. Burch, then Mrs. Woodworth, taught music in this place for a long period and is pleasantly remembered by her old pupils as well as by many other acquaintances, who will extend a warm welcome to her as a permanent resident among us.
