Born 12-01-48 at the Old Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, Reed was welcomed by his parents Levi Wallace McAtee and Anna Marjorie Blain McAtee into their home in Belhaven. He lived a magical life provided by his father who encouraged activities which helped develop a strong life of patriotism and community service. He was a thespian, loving the performances he was part of at Jackson Little Theater including "Anything Goes" "South Pacific" "Mame".
A 1967 graduate of Murrah High School in Jackson Mississippi, he continued his education at Hinds Community College while working at Cataphote in the lab.as a research technician. He spent seven years with Motion Industries in various inside office positions and outside sales in Jackson Mississippi and Monroe Louisiana. Reed became the Branch Manager of Sandair and after several years, expanded his professional career becoming plant manager at Mississippi Electric Sign and Plant Manager at Advertising Visuals, both positions giving him a broader knowledge of graphic design and application. His attention to detail and vast knowledge of construction equipment guided him to join Equipment Incorporated as the territory and special equipment manager working with Government, Military, City and State agencies, writing contracts and specifications This led to his becoming the Assistant Division Director for the MDOT (Mississippi Department of Transportation) in the procurement department and then moving to the Asset Management Division as the Specification Specialist. He retired from MDOT with over 25 years of service.
Reed was a patrolman with the Jackson Police Department Reserve, retiring after 25 years as Lieutenant. With interest in Ancestry Research, he spent his evenings during his professional career as a Surveyor and Photographer for Find A Grave, researching many cemeteries and documenting his findings online at Findagrave.com and bringing joy to those searching for family history.
Creating a balance in his life between work and recreation, Reed built and raced his number 98 mini stock VW at Jackson International Speedway in Clinton and worked alongside his close friend Earl "Buddy" Vick as track steward. Overlapping this, Reed built two radio controlled boats and traveled the southeast racing with his Captain Crunch winning first place at several lake events
Never compromising his moral standards and always working toward perfection, Reed was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, and leaned on his deep faith in all areas of his life, He was a member of and participated in charitable rides with CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association), Blue Knights, and other groups supporting community and patriotic causes. Reed was a Colonel in the Mississippi State Guard.
In 1971, Reed met and married his friend and partner, Sheila Lewis McAtee and they enjoyed 52 years together. In 1981 they welcomed their son, Brad into their lives where Reed instantly became a proud and supportive father.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila and son Brad. Mourning his passing is Willie, his Fur Baby who was with him constantly in the last day, He leaves behind a brother, Larry McAtee (Alice), one niece and two nephews and many friends who he felt were family with their shared experiences.
Reed was a passionate animal lover and caregiver. In lieu of flowers, please donate a bag of cat or dog food to your nearest shelter or rescue group and in Jackson donate to ARF or CARA who appreciate your support. Donations may also be made to Berea Baptist Church 2040 Smyth Street McCool, Mississippi 39108 supporting their cemetery upkeep on behalf in the name of Reed McAtee.
