Ms. Ruth Ann Butler, 81, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at North Greenville Hospital. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Reverend C. E. and Nina Westfield Butler.

Ruth Ann was a native Greenvillian, the ninth child of the late Rev. & Mrs. C. E. Butler. She is a graduate of Sterling High School; Benedict College, did further studies at Clemson and Furman Universities., and presently work at the Greenville Cultural Exchange Center. One of her hobbies was researching and writing family and church histories. She has successfully traced her own family history back to Africa, and organized the first Butler-Wood Family Reunion in 1982.

Ruth Ann is the founder of the Greenville Cultural Exchange Center, a museum to preserve black history in the upstate of South Carolina. It is located at 700 Arlington Avenue, Greenville, South Carolina. Ruth Ann had a passion for history. She filled the many requests for information from students of the school district, different colleges, and the news media for information concerning the African American history in the Upstate.

Surviving: one son, Benjamin Brown of Clearwater, FL; two sisters, Maybelle Butler Randolph and Louella Butler both of Greenville, SC; one brother, Reverend Dr. Grady Butler of Greenville, SC; two grandchildren, Mia Brown and Aiden Brown both of Clearwater, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services: Sunday, January 26, 2025, 2:00pm at Allen Temple AME Church with interment in Lowndes Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
