Susan was born on June 19, 1946, in Bakersfield, California, to Howard and Shirley Ashworth. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Corvallis, where she spent nearly her entire life. She graduated from Corvallis High School in 1964.
Susan met David Carpenter on a blind date in 1965. They later married and remained together for 30 years. David and Susan had a full household with four children, numerous cats and dogs, cows, a horse, and even a raccoon.
Susan worked for the Oregon State Athletic Department for over 30 years, providing administrative support to many coaches and teams. She remained an avid Beaver Believer throughout her life.
In addition to supporting the Beavers, Susan was a longtime bowler at Highland Bowl. She enjoyed reading (often saying "just one more chapter"), researching genealogy, and playing cards with her family.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved Rottweiler, Rommie.
She is survived by her children: Matt (Maria) Carpenter, Rachel (Mike) Holt, Nancy Carpenter, and Timothy (Jennifer) Carpenter; her sister, Carol Kent; her brothers, Dennis Ashworth and Glen Ashworth; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her two lifelong best friends, Janet Burgess and Joyce Beemer.
Susan's family would like to thank the outstanding staff and caregivers at both Lydia's House and Evergreen Hospice for their kindness, patience, and truly compassionate care.
A memorial service to celebrate Susan's life will be held in Corvallis this September. Details will be shared once they are finalized. Arrangements are being handled by DeMoss-Durdan.
