Henrietta (Henriqueta) was born in 1883 in Nayarit, Mexico, the daughter of Ysabel Lopez Portillo and Felix Galarza. Her first husband Ernesto Kradoyer divorced her, leaving her to raise their son Ernesto. She and her brothers were uprooted by the Mexican Revolution and immigrated to the United States about 1912, eventually settling in Sacramento. In 1916 she married Claudio Barragan. They were the parents of Henrietta Barragan, born on February 25, 1917, and Claudio, born on May 16, 1918. Henrietta died on November 8, 1918, during the Spanish flu epidemic.
Henrietta's children went to live with other families. The oldest son Ernesto Galarza (1905-1984) lived with his uncle Jose. After graduating from high school he earned a BA at Pomona College, MA at Stanford University and finally a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He becamse a well-known activist for farm laborers, professor and author. Nora Barragan(1913-1993) was adopted by the family's first landlady in Sacramento. She married twice. She and her husband John Lawson raised and bred camellias. The daughter Henrietta lived most of her life in Sacramento, marrying Robert McDearmon in 1939. Henrietta died on May 14, 2008, and Robert died in 1999. The ashes of both Robert and Henrietta McDearmon are buried in Sacramento Memorial Lawn (see FAG# 33917899). The youngest son Claudio died in 1924.
