Samuel J. Sabatino, known as "Happy" and "Uncle Hap" to family and friends, passed away on June 9, 2014 at his home in Jamesburg, New Jersey, at the age of 97.
The Sabatinos emigrated from Sicily and the family quickly became a foundation of Jamesburg's culture in the early 1900s. Happy was born on June 4, 1917, in the family home on Lincoln Avenue in Jamesburg, to Gaetana Libritzia and Dominick Sabatino and was one of 13 children. They were active in the St. James Church and owned local businesses on Railroad Ave. His life centered around the little town.
Samuel graduated from Jamesburg High School in 1936.
He served our country during WWII in the Army, stationed in the U.S., and went on to study accounting at Rutgers University.
Mr. Sabatino was hired by the Department of the Treasury to audit businesses' bookkeeping and worked in Washington, D.C. before being transferred to the New Brunswick NJ office which was closer to his hometown.
While in Washington D.C., he met Violet. They were married for 37 years and had one daughter.
Happy enjoyed bowling, golf, traveling to Boynton Beach FL as a snowbird, and spending almost every Sunday in the summer with his family at Point Pleasant Beach NJ.
Predeceased by his parents; his wife Violet; and 11 of his siblings, his survivors included his daughter Donna (& husband Gonzalo) Cortes; his granddaughters Joy Gabrielle and Christiana; his younger sister Serafina "Fran" Ceraso, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
