Born Abby Durfee Gray on January 21, 1828, in Fall River, she married Andrew Borden on June 6, 1865. They had no children together. Abby became part of the Borden household, where she lived with Andrew and his daughters from his first marriage, Emma and Lizzie. She remained Andrew's wife for 27 years and was known in the community as Mrs. Borden. Her life and family relationships later became the subject of extensive public attention because of the circumstances of her death. On August 4, 1892, Abby was murdered at the Borden family home in Fall River at the age of 64. She was found in an upstairs guest room, where she had been attacked while making the bed. Her husband was killed later that morning. Lizzie Borden was charged with both murders and was acquitted at trial in 1893.
