U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Lebanon, Virginia and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1833-35). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, as a Conservative to the Twenty-sixth Congress and as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh through the Twenty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1847. Not a candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Polk Chargé d’Affaires to Portugal, serving (1847-49). He was judge of the circuit court of Washington D.C., when elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving (1857-59). Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed practicing law and served in the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1859, until his death.
