Professional Baseball Player. Born in Northview, Missouri, he played Major League baseball for ten seasons as a power hitting outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs. Goodman made his debut on April 16, 1935 with Cincinnati when he was 26 years old. He was the starting right fielder for the first six years of his career. His finest season was in 1938, when he collected 166 hits, clubbed 30 homeruns, and drove in 92 runs. A left handed hitter, he hit over .300 twice and carried a lifetime batting average of .281. He played in four games in the 1939 World Series and hit .333 although the Reds were swept by the Yankees. Cincinnati returned to the Series in 1940 and defeated the Tigers in seven games, while Goodman had 8 hits in 29 times at bat. He was named to the All-Star game in 1939 and fractured his shoulder while diving for a ball in that game. He made the All-Star team again in 1940. His contract was purchased by the Cubs after 1942 and he finished his career in Chicago two years later. Goodman played in 1,107 games, hit 95 homeruns, and amassed 525 runs batted in. Fast on the base paths, he stole 49 bases and twice led the National League in triples. He was elected to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1959 and died in Cincinnati in 1984 when he was 76 years old.
