Graves in Germany are generally removed after 20-30 years, unless for example the period of use is extended by purchase. It is also possible that a grave site may be cleared because a reburial is to take place.

During clearance, the gravestone, plants etc. are removed. Any remaining bones are usually buried in a hollow dug into the ground at the grave site. The grave can then be used again.
