So w'll go no more a rovingbr /So late into the nightbr /Though the heart be still as lovingbr /And the moon be still as bright.br /br /Lord Byronbr /br /October 8th, 2011br /br /For this sad anniversary 9.10.02, br /dedicated to JHN :br /br / A Reminiscencebr /br / by Anne Brontëbr /br /YES, thou art gone! and never morebr / Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;br /But I may pass the old church door,br / And pace the floor that covers thee.br /br /May stand upon the cold, damp stone,br / And think that, frozen, lies belowbr /The lightest heart that I have known,br / The kindest I shall ever know.br /br /Yet, though I cannot see thee more,br / 'Tis still a comfort to have seen;br /And though thy transient life is o'er,br / 'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;br /br /To think a soul so near divine,br / Within a form so angel fair,br /United to a heart like thine,br / Has gladdened once our humble sphere.br /br /October 9th, 2012br /br / Le dormeur du valbr /br /C'est un trou de verdure où chante une rivière,br /Accrochant follement aux herbes des haillonsbr /D'argent ; où le soleil, de la montagne fière,br /Luit : c'est un petit val qui mousse de rayons.br /br /Un soldat jeune, bouche ouverte, tête nue,br /Et la nuque baignant dans le frais cresson bleu,br /Dort ; il est étendu dans l'herbe, sous la nue,br /Pâle dans son lit vert où la lumière pleut.br /br /Les pieds dans les glaïeuls, il dort. Souriant commebr /Sourirait un enfant malade, il fait un somme :br /Nature, berce-le chaudement : il a froid.br /br /Les parfums ne font pas frissonner sa narine;br /Il dort dans le soleil, la main sur sa poitrine,br /Tranquille. Il a deux trous rouges au côté droit.br /Arthur Rimbaud, Poésies, 1870 br /br /Translation :br /br /t is a green hollow where a stream gurgles,br /Crazily catching silver rags of itself on the grasses ;br /Where the sun shines from the proud mountain :br /It is a little valley bubbling over with light.br /br /A young soldier, open-mouthed, bare-headed,br /With the nape of his neck bathed in cool blue cresses, br /Sleeps; he is stretched out on the grass, under the sky,br /Pale on his green bed where the light falls like rain.br /br /His feet in the yellow flags, he lies sleeping. Smiling as br /A sick child might smile, he is having a nap :br /Cradle him warmly, Nature: he is cold.br /br /No odour makes his nostrils quiver ;br /He sleeps in the sun, his hand on his breastbr /At peace. There are two red holes in his right side.
