Our interest our found in Walker & Odeiman family names and, The 1st Michigan Sharpshooters, Company K, of the Civil War, 1861-1865. A Native American regiment of Michigan who saw battle in The Battle Of The Wilderness, Spotsylvania and the Siege Of Petersburg.
A fire in Emmet County Michigan in Cross Village at Holy Cross Rectory burned all vital records to local cemeteries on February 23, 1970 To add to the confusion in researching our Odeimin ancstors, when a death certificate reads "Cross Village," as a place of burial, this could mean:
1) Old Indian at 6100 N Wadsworth Street in Cross Village. Today this is considered the Father Weikamp Cemetery and enclosed by a cyclone fence.
2) Holy Cross Parish Cemetery located just outside Cross Village on W. Levering Road.3) Old Indian Cemetery AKA, Anamiewatigoing located on Oak Drive. The Native American Cemetery at 6100 N. Wadsworth Street was condemed by the board of health in 1888. This small plot of land contains hundreds of Indian burials. Our ancestors are in fact, still there but the markers have been removed after the cemetery became full. It is still consecrated ground.
It is very likely that our Odeimin relatves are in the the old Indian cemetery, now known as Fr. Wykeimp Cemetery, If our relatives died before condemnation in 1948. Feel free to copy,use and share any image which we have published on any memorial.
