Born and raised in Burnsville, NC Yancey County and looking for family history with a passion! After my mamma died in 2006 I realized that so much family information died with her so I began searching for any and all family data and record it as I go for my daughter and others in our family.
At the age of 7 years old I accidently found out that my father had a very brief marriage in 1949 while serving in the Air Force. I believe they were both about 17 years old and their marriage produced a baby girl that had apparently died quite young. However, there was confusion about the telegram that arrived stating that "Daddy died". It was in fact "Baby died". I have always wanted to know what happened to her so I began searching in 2006. Find A Grave was where I finally found her and thanks to Trish I now have a photo and the correct birth and death dates listed. Even after obtaining her death certificate earlier this year I was unable to go any further until I found Find A Grave! Our family is filled with mixed emotions both sadness and elation at finding her after 60 years. I will never forget my Father's face as I handed him the copy of her death certificate.
When my Father married my Mother their first child was a daughter and she is named Joann after my Father's firstborn.
I now live near Charlotte, NC but will be returning to Yancey County within 2 to 3 years after we retire. The mountains somehow make me feel closer to God!
