From an early age I have taken care to note family history as I knew it. I heard stories told repeatedly at the Sunday dinner table, special events or at holiday gatherings. Many of the people sharing these memories were from Europe. The mastering of the English language came much later if at all. There were few written documentations in English at that time outside those of legal immigration. These wonderful people retold their stories as to not forget them plus to share their history for future generations. They strove to be buried together, as memorials would indicate them as a family unit. I would make more of my notes as I got older. They consisted of what I had heard at those times. Later I began asking questions. I asked why the cemetery memorials were of such importance? Their reply indicated they wanted to be remembered as a family and to be "found" together. Never forgotten. I threw these scraps of papers into an old cigar box. What a treasure chest that turned out to be.
Growing up in Ohio, Pennsylvania and visiting nearby West Virginia, I learned how to match those early stories with these areas over time. It has been challenging but mostly rewarding to at last document the stories with the names, dates, obituaries. Many photos of these mysterious persons have been added. The discovery of long lost cousins, unknown siblings plus other remarkable new facts is mind blowing. My family has been brought together with the help of many on this site. Thank you all.
I am retired, living in NE Ohio bordering PA. I try to help family and friends to solve their mysteries of connection. Ancestry, Find A Grave, researching, field trips and those scraps of paper have merged into a wonderful explanation of whom we are and from where we came. Everyone needs to know from where they came. Most importantly, I think of those now gone. I want them to know they are "found together" and are documented as such for the future generations. I have been at this for over 60 years! I am the old one now! I wanted to be "found" too one day.
