I have been doing genealogy for almost 50 years now. Starting with my own history which is very hard to trace since both my great grandparents came from Portugal to Hawaii.
43 years ago, when I met my husband's grandparents, Ray and Mildred Aleshire, Ray gave me four names written on a piece of paper, the names of his parents and the names of his wife, Mildred Cummings Aleshire's parents. From there I started a letter writing campaign writing to every Aleshire in the US. Since he said to me, "if the name is Aleshire, their related." From there I received many letters. Then ten years later the Internet came up and searching for family became easier. Still not so much from my line, but my husbands. Through my research I have met so many wonderful "cousins" and have enjoyed hooking up a few with long lost parents and siblings.
I know this is an endeavor that will never end, but I am so blessed that I can leave a legacy to our son so he knows who he is and where he came from.
