I had the pleasure of growing up in the San Francisco/Bay Area just an hour's drive from Colma. Colma is the city that was literally built around the dead, with cemeteries comprising 73% of the land. In 1914, when San Francisco decided that real estate was just too valuable to be taken up by cemeteries, they ordered that all graves be dug up and moved to Colma. Some of the oldest and most elaborate statues and mausoleums can be found in the cemeteries there.

I lived for a short while in Upstate New York and loved the old cemeteries there. Nothing on the west coast compares to the really old cemeteries of New England.

I moved up to the Pacific Northwest 13 years ago. I live Port Angeles, WA, on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula.
