The photos and information I've found here a significant help when creating my family tree. I hope to make similar contributions which may help others in their own quests, as so many others have helped me.
Mount Olivet Cemetery - Hanover, PA:
This cemetery is nowhere near 90+% photographed, there are still about 20,000 interments in Mt. Olivet not yet recorded on findagrave.
I'd intended to transcribe every stone in the cemetery, spending a ridiculous amount of time cleaning up after other F-A-G members who have half-assed this cemetery for years. Then the memorial collectors breezed through with their cameras, rushing home to create thousands of incomplete, junk "memorials" with no additional information of any kind, ignoring any graves with a stone that couldn't be read from the low quality photos they were in such a rush to take, and completely missing all of the flat stones covered with snow at the time. Now it's a bigger mess than the one I started with.
If an existing photo is of poor quality (even one of my own) and you'd like a better one leave me a message and I'll see what I can do. There are many factors influencing the quality of a grave marker photo, some are tough to get around.
My memorials:
I do not scour the internet for obituaries 24/7 nor do I pore over historical records looking for names to add to my "collection". Quality trumps quantity.
The overwhelming majority of my memorials are created from information I interpret to the best of my ability from grave markers I personally visited, then spent time researching how people in the same plot were related. However, I will err, if you spot an error let me know the what and why so I can correct it.
When it comes to edit requests I will not accept death certificates or Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards as the only source to change the information on a memorial. Death certificates are often wrong, citing the location a person was declared dead, not where they actually died. The Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Card file is embarassingly full of errors and misinformation.
A word about photos:
I require the simple courtesy of attribution. "Photo by Jeff Schneider" and a link to the findagrave memorial page works just fine if using my photos elsewhere. I do send DMCA takedown orders forcing sites to remove unattributed photos. Attribute it or lose it.
Posting someone else's photo with the appearance that it's yours is a jerk move, and should anyone ever have a question about the grave, the plot, or the cemetery, you'd have no answer and they'd have no idea where to look for someone who did.
