I am not quite sure when my love of photography started but my love for photographing cemeteries started when I was about 13 years old. I was born in the high desert of Eastern Oregon and grew up surrounded by the apple orchards and farmland of Fruitland, Idaho. While in middle school I went on an incredible field trip with my science teacher to the ghost town of Silver City, Idaho. My favorite part of the entire trip was the time we spent at the cemetery, reading the headstones and wondering what it must have been like to live in this mining town during its hay-day. Since that time I have tried to visit a number of different cemeteries in various states. I have seen some incredible tributes to loved ones in my explorations and some headstones that are in desperate need of repair before they disappear altogether. If I had unlimited money I fix those that needed fixing and I would replace those that need to be replaced!
In my free time I photograph landscapes and wildlife, my family adventures and the Northern Lights. In the last 10 years I have been interested in exploring my families past. It has been an incredible experience, and I will never stop seeking out family members. My goal is to travel to Germany, where my g-g-g-g-paternal grandparents emigrated from and then on to Ireland and Scotland for my g-g-g-g-maternal grandparents emigrated from. I would love to photograph the cemeteries my distant family members are resting in over there.
In 2005 I moved to Alaska and have been blessed to walk through some incredible cemeteries. My greatest find however, was not in a cemetery but in the woods, off a road, where no one would know it was there. I have often wondered whom the gentleman was that the cross was made for and how it ended up where it did. There was a pretty fancy headstone in front of it with his name and dates on it. I tried to look him up to see if I could figure out whom he was but have had no luck. I imagine that he was a gold seeker that settled in the mountains outside of Fairbanks, close to the creek where he rests.
If you want to have a gravesite photographed up here in Alaska, I would love to help if I can. I live in Mat-Su Valley, 50 miles North of Anchorage, and about 350 miles South of Fairbanks. I make trips to Valdez, the Kenai Peninsula, and Interior Alaska during the spring-summer months. I would be happy to help in any of those areas during that time. If you have photographs you would like taken around my area I would be happy to help any time of year, as long as there isn’t a ton of snow on the ground. ☺
