Born Jan 19, 1940 Lake Charles, LA. Son of William T. and Letha Anderson. Family included Mother, Letha Ellen (Bertrand), Sisters Billy Darlene and Mary Lois. The family followed father in Oil Drilling jobs until six years old. Settled in LaBlanc, LA at age 6 to attend Reeves, La Elementary School. Moved to Kinder in 1948 to attend third grade, lived on Family Estate until 1952 when mother moved into Denney House to take care of two Aunts Mary and Manon Denney. Raised in Kinder, Louisiana graduating from Kinder high school in 1958. Joined USAF Aviation Cadet program in April 1959, finished Navigator training at Harlingen AFB, TX with cadet class 60-07. Married Georgia Beth Elam April 1960. He then proceeded through Electronic Warfare Training at Keesler AFB Biloxi, Mississippi graduating in June 1961. Survival training at Stead AFB, NV, Combat crew training with ground school at Merced AFB, CA and flight training at Roswell AFB, NM. 2nd Lt. Anderson joined the 6th Bomb Squadron, 4123rd Strategic Bomb Wing at Clinton Sherman AFB, OK in Sept 1961. Various assignments at the Bomb wing included: B-52 crew EWO, Training Devices Officer, and Chief of Penetration Aids. Captain Anderson was assigned to 544th Aerospace Technical Reconnaissance Wing in June 1967 at HQ Strategic Air Command, Omaha, NE. Various duties there included: Analyst, EWO Support, Intelligence Briefer, and Section Chief, until Captain Anderson was selected for undergraduate EE at Air Force Institute of Technology in Jun 1969. A student at AFIT, Dayton, OH, Major Anderson graduated June 1971 with a BS EE and was then assigned to the 42 Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron, Korat Thailand in Sept 1971. Major Anderson flew as EB-66 EWO, Chief ELINT Processing Branch and served as EWO Flight Commander. Completed 80 combat missions, participating in first B-52 strikes against Vinn, Hai Phong harbor and Hanoi. Awarded the USAF Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf. Was EWO officer on EB66 Bat 22 on the mission that resulted in the shoot-down of Bat21 and the historic rescue mission recorded in books and film.
Upon his return from Thailand, Major Anderson was assigned to the Foreign Technology Division, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. There he married Johnnieve McDowell Miller and acquired step daughter Leslie Elizabeth. The next 11 years were spent in various assignment related to the Foreign Technology Division and Air Force Systems Command. During this time Lt. Col. Anderson attended the Defense Systems Management College in residence at Ft Belvoir, Virginia. His assignments with FTD included, SAM Analyst, Branch Chief, Division Chief -Threat Division, Air Force Systems Command Liaison to the National Security Agency, Executive Officer to the Commander, and Director of the FTD Sensor Data Directorate. Promoted to Colonel in 1982, He was selected in April 1983 to head up a reorganization study of the Intelligence programs at Hanscom AFB, MA. Col. Anderson was then assigned to lead the Intelligence Systems Program Office and 19 programs for the Electronic Systems Division of Air Force Systems Command. He was responsible for the Marine Corps Intelligence Analysis Center (deployable) as well as several Cobra Sensor programs. Col. Anderson was also the designated DOD Acquisition Manager interacting with the Central Intelligence Agency in development of the first digital imagery exploitation system (IDEX II) for wide spread use. Col. Anderson retired 30 April 1985 with 26 years of service. Included among Colonel Anderson's decorations are: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross -Oak Leaf, and Air Combat Medals.
He then joined the Management and Engineering consulting firm of Booz, Allen and Hamilton, Inc in the Washington DC Area. During the next 15 years with the firm, Ed Anderson worked for all of the major national intelligence agencies including the CIA, NSA, DIA and NRO and three branches of the military. He assisted HQ NASA in the establishment of a safety information office after the Challenger accident.
Ed Anderson retired as a Principal of the Firm in July 1999. He and his wife Johnnie, then moved to Matthews, NC where his principle past times are engineering tasks associated with maintaining and improving the experimental aircraft he built and flies, conducting Family Geneaology research and enjoying his three grandsons in the area, staying in contact with old friends and thoroughly enjoying life. He has a total of 5 grandsons ranging in age from 1 to 17 years, three daughters, Rhea, Zonya and Leslie as well as two sisters, Billy Darlene and Mary Lois.
