From Portland Maine, I'm author of five cemetery- and gravestone-themed books including "Portland's Historic Eastern Cemetery" to celebrate the cemetery's 350th anniversary, and "Early Gravestones in Southern Maine," which profiles the life and work of the area's first gravestone-maker, Bartlett Adams, whose shop produced some 2,000 markers that are found throughout the region.

Released in June 2026 was "Stories from Maine Cemeteries: Lives Cut Short." And two books feature "billboard monuments" which are unique and rare large gravemarkers from the mid-1800s elevated on posts and resembling signboards.

I've served on the Board of the non-profit Friends of Eastern Cemetery group in Portland (known as Spirits Alive) since 2013, currently in the capacity of the cemetery's historian. I also served six years as an officer on the board of the national Association for Gravestone Studies. I design and lead tours of historic cemeteries in the region (at 20 different sites and counting...).
