I found the FindAGrave website in 2013 while looking for information about my mom online and was led from there to distant relatives that I hadn't known about before that time.
Today I found a box of old photos belonging to my mother, several from the 1800's (I know, right?!!!), in a box in the bottom of a closet.
I spent half the day looking at photos and genealogy books related to my family, and even took snapshots of some of the photos to send to my sister.
Now, of course, I have the genealogy bug. It's at war with my over-zealous desire to maintain my privacy. It's just a guess, but I think privacy may be losing. :)
