I began research on the family tree when I was 18. It has been a long process of trying to piece together ancestors. John & Sarah Longfield are my 3x great grandparents and emigrated from Pennsylvania to the Wisconsin territory prior to their first child's birth in 1847. Jesse Wm. Longfield was the first ancestor in my line born in the territory and much of this research was done by a great aunt to document Wisconsin Century Ancestry.
I believe John & Sarah to have been married in approximately 1843. They made the journey of about 550 miles (Based on what I can find of marriage information) to settle in Madison. Wisconsin became a state in 1848.
My family lines encompass mainly Dane and Vernon Counties. Paternal line mainly of German decent and Maternal side primarily Norwegian. Searching Longfield, Genske, Schimming, Binger, Tessendorf, Zarndt, Davis, Sheldon, Thompson, Steenberg (Stenberg, Christiansen) and so many more.
Married, mother of two, and a grandmother the older I get the more important all this is to me.
It is an emotional journey to find the names, learn of the hardships and losses. It also brings a tremendous sense of strength as I see even when some lost all but one child they stayed the course and we're all here now because of it.
