I grew up in northwestern Rockingham County, VA, where all my ancestors have lived for 200 or more years. Some of my ancestors like the Custers were among the first settlers in the area, coming in the 1740s and 50s.
I began researching local and family history when I was a teen. I've compiled and written about 15 books and typed/edited about 40 other books for genealogists and Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society (now Rocktown History).
My mother Lena Albrite Turner learned to copy and develop photos and collected hundreds of photos of local families. I have continued the work and have several thousand images.
My goal is to place tombstones at as many of our small family cemeteries as possible, with names and dates if available. As of 2025, we've helped preserve about 8 cemeteries.
