I'm Barbara HARMON Johnson. My Dad knew little about his family. He did not even know where he was born until he obtained with the help of his older siblings, a delayed Birth Certificate. I had to make a Cemetery rubbing of my Great Grandmother's unreadable tombstone to convince myself & my cousins that she was the dau/of Hector & J. Ross. My cousins had told me she was the dau. of the brother of Abigail Smith Adams, the wife & mother of two US Presidents. In researching my Ross family & trying to connect them to Rev. George & his son, Rev. Aeneas Ross buried in Immanuel Churchyard, the following is quoted from GenealogyTrails: "There are several vaults & while these...may contain the remains of many, there is rarely more than one inscription on each...& the entries in the parish register are so imperfect there is no record whatever of the burials of the very many who rest in the Churchyard...(including the Rev. George Ross). I have found incorrect tombstones, pictures or records that no longer exist; inaccurate info. in books, printed publications; & inaccurate family stories. In a few cemeteries, I visited, I found pieces of tombstones thrown over the fence. These are some of the reasons that FindAGrave is needed.
The online research of a distant relative helped me connect my family to the right Harmon tree which is the reason collaborating with other researchers is so very important. I had made the common mistake of assuming Amos Harmon was not a common name. I believe keeping an open mind & appreciating the research of others is very important in doing Genealogy. Educatiional textbooks water down history, but by reading newspaper articles & books while doing Genealogy, I have obtained a clearer picture of what life was like for our ancestors a Century or so ago. After I started researching in the 1990's, & found so many Genealogical errors, I sent for LDS films & microfiche of cemetery, will, census, & marriage records. My goal is to write an accurate biography for all my Findagrave memorials with as many resources as I can find because some managers of memorials of my relatives refuse to make suggested edits in spite of all the evidence that I have. Thankfully these managers are indeed rare because most of us want to keep Findagrave Memorials as accurate as possible. My other goal is to link as many findagraves as I can to their relatives.
