Born in Dallas, Texas. A 5th generation Texan.
My great grandmother, Allie Rippy Graves, was the first woman to serve as Hopkins County Texas Clerk, having taken over the position when her husband, JC Graves died in office. Many cousins served in official capacity in our area. One of my cousins (Francis Marion Jordan Jr.) was the 1st sheriff in Tarrant County, Texas in the 1850s shortly before it became Tarrant Co. Others were old-time settlers farming, picking cotton, serving in wars or running various businesses. My great grandfather Anderson had one leg amputated from a barbwire wound as a boy. I find humor in he was proprietor of a shoe repair business - the building is still standing right off the Cooper, Texas square where Dad's uncle died in the back room after stating he wasn't feeling so well. Dad, as a boy, was hit by a car on the Cooper corner square! Jumped up and ran knowing he would get a whooping for running in the street. He tells stories of when there was a "white movie theater" and a "black movie theater" on each end of the Cooper square. Same old black man ran the movies for both places. (Need to get his name again from Dad) Other direct cousins were Dallas gangsters (at least one killed by police); some were flat out ne'er do wells. All were instrumental in settling the areas of Hopkins, Delta and Tarrant and Lamar Counties. I like hearing & learning their stories. Fascinating.
Surnames: Anderson, Smith, Brown, Brock, Rippy/Rippey, Graves, Ritchey/Ritchie, Dodson, Drennan, Tarter/Darter, Weatherly, Snow, Stewart, Jordan.
