My Dad was "Hugo" of Hugo's Trading Post, across from the Spence Cemetery at corner of Silverleaf and Dugspur Roads, between Laurel Fork and Dugspur, Va. Dad passed away in Dec 2015, and left me his 3 acres - which is possibly the last 3 acres of the Isham Spence (1792-1852)/Nancy Redpath homestead, that is still owned by a descendant. Isham was the oldest child of Burwell Spence (1763-1844), Revolutionary war vet, and one of the first Spence's in that part of the country. Dad's father, Edgar Goad, married Essie Laudia Spence - Isham's Great great granddaughter - and came into possession of the place. Thats how the Goad's ended up being buried in the Spence Cemetery. Dad grew up on the place, and I also lived there several years of my youth. He and Essie had a lot of knowledge of the people and places which is now slipping away, altho a lot of grandma's research is included in many genealogical works of that area. Dad's store was in a tractor trailer bed beside an old wooden store built by Essie's dad, George Hylton Spence. We removed these just before dad passed away.
PS. I just finished making a detailed map of this Spence cemetery! (6 Jul 2018). My hope was that you could walk around the cemetery with your smart phone (or whatever device) and see the info. I Uploaded it to the site...you can see it there, but its too small to read, and zooming in doesn't help. If you would like me to email you this map (which may make it much more readable), just contact me at [email protected]. I measured the location of each stone in the cemetery and plotted it out - so its pretty accurate. I added the names and dates for each that are known. ALSO, I made an attempt , based on my grandma Essie's notes, to draw connecting lines between graves to show relationships! It is kinda neat how almost all the ones buried here are connected. Maybe they all are, and I just don't know how. There are several marked graves with unknown names...most of these are small and in the old part - so probably very young children of the early settlers. I have recently added all of Essie's notes on the cemetery to this site...so you can see, hopefully, what she knew about them. I think she did those in probably the 1980s. If you have other info you can add it to the site. If you have other info for the map, let me know. Thanks!
