Bio
The first child of Harold Raymond Simon and Delores Arbutus Hatala. He was born on November 26, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan. Harold, a.k.a. Harry and Hal, married Lori Kay Spence, the daughter of Ronald Avery Spence and Jacquelyn Helen Nelson, on December 21, 1980 in LeRoy, Michigan. Together they had two children: Daniel Charles, and Jacquelyn Paige. Hal lived what he described as a "nomadic life" as a child; being a preacher's kid and only having lived in one place for three grades of school, Carleton, Michigan (grades 5-7). He became the first Simon of the tree to graduate from high school when he graduated from Ludington High School in 1970. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war, from 1972 - 1980, where he "rode" the nuclear submarine, the USS Von Steuben SSBN 632 (Blue) for four years. Prior to that he was an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Idaho Falls, Idaho where he trained sailors how to operate the engineering section of a nuclear submarine. Harry, as he was called in the Navy and by brother David, was honorably discharged just after passing the E-7, "Chief's Machinist Mate" exam, in August of 1980. From there he went to Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where he graduated summa cum laude, as salutatorian for the Winter Class of 1982, with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, majoring in Physical Science and minoring in Mathematics. Alma, Michigan would be the next and last stop in his professional career. Harold taught science and math for grades 6 - 9 at the "old" Alma Middle School, the Alma High School, and finally retiring from the "new" Donald L. Pavlik Middle School after 33 years of service. He also was the school district Science and Math Coordinator as well as the science department chairman for both the middle and high schools for many of those years. In the summer of 2016 Hal retired to a ten-acre piece of land on Robinson Lake, near LeRoy, Michigan. This lake was his wife's dad's favorite lake, one on which Hal and Ron fished many winters together, and one very near the location his parents retired to in Luther, Michigan. Here Harold and Lori chose to build a new lakeside home of their own design to enjoy the rest of their lives at.
