I was born in Detroit, MI and now reside in North Carolina. During my family history research, I found my maternal grandfather had siblings that also immigrated from Balnica, Galicia, Austria (Poland). Three sisters and one brother so far, that with as much documentation that I could find, such as Immigration passenger manifests, naturalization papers, death certificates and some 2nd, possibly 3rd cousin DNA matches, proved the relationships. The village of Balnica was destroyed in 1947 in Poland's Russian backed 'Operation Vistula' and so very few records are available.
My maternal grandmother was from Smolnik, Galicia, Austria in the same general area as my grandfather's village. I have found many cousins on Ancestry that I never knew I had. DNA testing made a world of difference in my research, and I intend to make sure our family's memorials are correct to the best of my ability.
My father's side is also ongoing family research in Poland too. They came from areas of Poland that were once part of the Russian Empire and just as surprising and intriguing as my mother's side.
