My own family history research spans the former mining communities of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Somerset, with detours into the fens of Lincolnshire, the former steel city of Sheffield, and the story of Joseph—an eleven-year-old pauper who, in 1809, was taken from the Lambeth Workhouse in London and "apprenticed" to servitude until 22 years old in the cotton mills of Nottinghamshire.
