I am Yvonne, a descendant of the Hundleys from the "Reservation" from the Bruton District of York County, Virginia. The community was initially settled by free African Americans prior to the Civil War. During Reconstruction, the community was self-sustaining as evidenced by their privately owned farms and businesses such as oystering and carpentry. In addition, residents built schools, fraternal halls, three churches (St John Baptist Church, Williamsburg; Rising Sun Baptist Church; Yorktown, and Little Zion Church, Grove) established several cemeteries including Cheesecake Cemetery.
On August 17, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive order #1472 to seize our family land to establish the Navy Depot by eminent domain which displaced many families. The descendants of Anthony and Octavia Hundley, along with approximately 100 families in a community known as "The Reservation," were given 30 days to vacate over 11,000 acres in the winter. The area later became the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. The Cheesecake Cemetery is the final resting place of many community founders and includes the grave of Civil War soldier Edward Ratcliff, a member of the 38th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops and recipient of the Medal of Honor.
A new historical marker telling the story of "The Reservation – Charles Corner" was approved on March 17, 2022 and will be unveiled late summer.
