Bio
I enjoy puzzles and I enjoy social history. Find A Grave is a great combination of those two. I first researched my family's genealogy for a middle school project using the memories of living people. Later in my mid 20s I had some free time and researched by walking through cemeteries, digging through dusty archived records, and scrolling through old microfilm. Wow, has technology made research so much faster and easier. It is still enjoyable to walk through cemeteries on a nice day. The app and GPS locating make it easy to share info with others who may live far away or are not be able to wander to find information.
I enjoy reading obituaries to learn a little more about the life represented by the "dash" on the headstone.
Every life has value, no matter how short, and the person was someone's child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc.
It is interesting to see generational legacies. Even if the generational patterns were not pleasant they can be changed going forward. While we may be influenced by nature and nurture we can take responsibility for our choices and make things better for future generations.
The bulk of my research branches out from Creswell, Lancaster County, PA where my paternal grandfather always told the story of how he met my paternal grandmother when she was sitting on a stone wall outside of the Creswell church.
My family has walked stone by stone, checking, adding, and GPSing every stone we could in the following cemeteries. Some very old ones were unreadable and the best we could do was update GPS coordinates for the photos that thankfully were taken before even more of the elements took their toll. It's possible a recent stone is not there or is out for additional updates.
