USAF Veteran, 1977-1981. During my time in service I was selected to to an area of the South Pacific to help recover and remove dirt, debris etc exposed fallout from 43 nuclear weapons. Between 1946 through 1958 the United States conducted testing of various types of nuclear weapons during the immediate years following the WWII. Those 43 nuclear warheads exposed the people of Enewetak Atoll, RMI (Republic of Marshall Islands)to vast amounts of ionizing radiation destroying the lives, heritage and culture of the Marshallese people. Runit island has two (2) craters created by two of the aforementioned 43 blasts. Between 1977 and 1980 the US government attempted to remove the contaminated material by containment in the Cactus Crater. I was part of the Joint Task Force Enewetak sent to assist with the cleanup of the ionizing radiation. The Marshall Islands are now known as the.South Pacific proving grounds and Runit is known as the most dangerous island in the world.
