I'm a retired academic and disability pensioner. I have long enjoyed cemetery walks, whether or not accompanied by photography. In recent months I have been back actively at family history research, which has included tracking ancestors back to a number of smaller cemeteries in the area where I now live.
I decided to begin contributing to Find-a-Grave after visiting one small graveyard nearby which is in a serious state of decline and apparently has been for twenty years, probably much longer, and I have a sense of the mortuary history of the area literally collapsing into the earth, or being erased over time.
In the same way that my family history work is a way to acknowledge those who came before me and to contribute to a collective historical record, volunteering here gives me a way to acknowledge past generations and to ensure that their existence and passing is not lost to time.
