Our family history includes direct descent from The Most Reverend & Right Honourable Dr. John Potter DD, Archbishop of Canterbury, and from Thomas Venner, a Fifth Monarchist associated with one of the most turbulent periods in seventeenth-century England.

The parentage of John Theophilus Potter remained uncertain for many decades and was historically attributed either to The Very Reverend Dr. John Potter STP, Dean of Canterbury, or to his wayward brother Thomas Potter MP, a founding member of the notorious Hellfire Club. Newly discovered Irish baptism records reveal John Theophilus Potter was born out of wedlock to Dean Dr. John Potter STP and a woman named Alice, during his marriage to Martha Potter.

Contemporary correspondence, political commentary, and eighteenth-century satire surrounding Thomas Potter MP, describe allegations of an intimate relationship with the wife of a prominent bishop and claims regarding the possible paternity of her only son. These accounts, preserved in historical letters, memoirs, and literary works, remain subjects of historical interest and interpretation.
