I am a writer and former broadcaster for National Public Radio affiliate stations. I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. My family, the Cottons on my maternal side lived in Alabama since before the American Revolution. The Cottons served with the Patriots, and with the Confederacy during the Civil War. My great grandmother, Elizabeth and her sisters, Julia and Mary moved north after their father's death. They eventually settled in Nebraska.
