Gone but not Forgotten NSW
Preserving the Past. Honouring Lives. Connecting Communities.
Gone but not Forgotten NSW is a community-based archaeological, anthropological, genealogical, and historical research initiative dedicated to preserving the stories of the people who shaped New South Wales.
Our projects bring together volunteers, family historians, archaeologists, historians, photographers, students, and local communities to research, document, and preserve cemeteries, burial grounds, and the lives of those buried within them.
Our flagship initiative, the Sandgate Cemetery Research Project, is creating one of the most comprehensive historical and biographical databases for Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle. Through historical records, family histories, photographs, newspapers, military records, church registers, maps, and archaeological recording, we are uncovering the lives behind the headstones and ensuring these stories are preserved for future generations.
We are also expanding our work through the St. Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery Research Project in Paterson, documenting one of the Hunter Region's earliest pioneer cemeteries and preserving the stories of the families who helped establish the district.
As our organisation grows, additional cemetery research projects across New South Wales will be developed under the Gone but not Forgotten NSW banner, creating a network of community-led heritage projects that celebrate local history and protect our shared cultural heritage.
Our work extends beyond genealogy. By combining archaeological recording, anthropological research, historical investigation, photography, and digital preservation, we aim to better understand how communities developed, how people lived, worked, loved, served, migrated, and were remembered.
We believe every person has a story worth telling.
Whether marked by an elaborate monument, a simple plaque, or an unmarked grave, every life contributes to the history of our communities.
Together with our volunteers and the families who generously share their stories, we are creating a lasting historical record that will support education, heritage preservation, family history research, and future generations.
