On 18 September 1862 this German Company B, with about 100 men mostly from Syracuse, including the officers, was mustered into Union service and posted at Camp White until 23 September when the regiment went to Washington. During the war they took part in the following battles: Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wauhatchie, Lookout Mountain, Ringgold, Resaca, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Pine Knob, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and the siege of Savannah. They were present at the battles of Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Aversboro, Bentonville and The Carolinas. In total they lost 133 dead and 353 wounded.
