Army Air Corps B-24 crew members who shared time and memories with my Dad, 2nd Lt Clarence B. Rich. They first became a family in Texas where they were assigned as a crew of a B-24-J. They flew from Texas to Mass. for deployment to Welding, England. In England they were part of the 577th Squadron, 392nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, Army Air Corps and flew 12 successful bombing missions including the D-Day Invasion. On their 13th mission June 23, 1944, flying Lead Plane ( With extra men in the crew),"the aircraft took a direct hit by flak in #3 engine and bomb bay, at the target. The plane immediately went into a dive, then pulled up slightly, rolled over and went out of control. They were shot down over enemy occupied, Laon, France. (5) chutes seen." Of the 11 crew 5 were killed, 5 were captured, and C.B. evaded captured and spent 70 days behind enemy lines working his way to the American Lines. For an intense time they were "family", some of those relationships lasted the rest of their lives.
