Piedmont Institute, AKA Piedmont Hill Hospital (one of seven in Liberty) was the hospital for Confederate soldiers with infectious diseases and upon death they were buried on the property. In 1875 a monument was erected in honor of these soldiers by the Bedford Ladies Memorial Association. In 1921 the remains and the monument were moved from their original resting place to Longwood Cemetery and rededicated. Text of Plaque on Monument: "Placed in Memory and Honor of the Five Hundred Brave Soldiers of the Confederacy interred below this monument. Some are known by name, all are known to God. May their memory be forever etched in the minds and hearts of the sons and daughters of the Confederacy. This monument was erected and dedicated by the Bedford Ladies Memorial Association, the Joseph E. Johnson United Confederate Veterans Camp and the General William R. Terry Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy." Thanks to the Bedford Genealogical Society, Inc, for the results of their research enabling me to complete the regimental information for these fallen soldiers.
