The 1st burial recorded in the Farquhar Cemetery was that of Colonel James R. Cooke (Cook) in 1843. The land was owned by James Lockhart Farquhar. Upon Farquhar's death in 1873 his will defines the cemetery: "On the hundred acres land given to my wife Dieppe Farquhar there is a public grave yard of one acre of land with right of way from public road from Washington to Independence." Though today (2013) there is no grave marker for Farquhar it is assumed he and his 1st and 2nd wives, sisters Huldah and Dieppe Wells, as well as other family members are buried in this cemetery.
