Located in Dorchester Township of Macoupin Co IL, this cemetery is actually the second St Mary's Catholic Cemetery which has been associated with the parish of The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (aka St Mary's). In 1844 the parish church was originally located in Ridgely, Madison, IL about 50 feet south of IL 159 and Renken Road on IL 159. With just a few Catholic families attending, the parish was relocated in Bunker Hill where more Catholic families were settling. In 1866 five acres was sold by John Carroll for $25 to Bishop Henry D Junkers, the first Bishop of Alton Diocese, for use as the Bunker Hill parish cemetery.Every year on Memorial Day holiday a Mass is celebrated at the cemetery using the outdoor altar that was erected in the 1970's. A short military service is provided by the American Legion Post of Bunker Hill before the the Mass. Anyone may attend.
