Volga German immigrants from Herzog, Samara, Volga, Russia. Herzog was a Roman Catholic colony founded on 14 July 1766 by LeRoy and Pictet with 114 people in 35 households. Peak population was 2,357 in 1912. The church in Herzog was a part of the Rohleder parish until 1903. A new church built of brick was completed in 1897.
