Mary Ann Bourbonnais (Anderson) Was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in about 1841. Her father was French, her mother was pottawatomie Indian. She attended school in the Old St. Mary's School in Kansas, one of the best Indian schools of the Southwest. At age 16, she married Lewis J. Harris, a Kentuckian. He died in 1859. In 1862, she married Antoine Bourbonnais,he was French/Indian. Following the 1867 treaty Mary and Antoine traveled by wagon from Kansas and relocated to Indian Territory reservation in 1872. In 1882 she moved to Shawneetown near present day Tecumseh. She was the first superintendent of the Sunday school in the Friends Church until 1900. Many of the older residents of pottawatomie County remember the work of Mary Bourbonnais, affectionately caled "Aunty Bourbonnais" who was active in the religious life of the community, and all efforts for upholding Indian character and education.Thus, the work of humans end with life but earnest endeavor leaves indelible effects on people and the history of a community.
