1781 Rivera Expedition

A Virtual Cemetery created by Californianos

61 memorials

This cemetery contains memorials for identified members of Capitán Fernando Rivera y Moncada's expedition to Alta California to establish el Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles (Sep. 4, 1781), Mission San Buenaventura (Mar. 31, 1782), and the Presidio of Santa Barbara (Apr. 21, 1782). Capitán Rivera recruited 12 families of pobladores and at least 45 soldados in Culiacán and Sinaloa and then assembled them at Real de los Alamos, Sonora, during the Winter of 1780. The first contingent of settlers and 17 soldiers under Lieutenant Zúñiga departed Alamos February 2, 1781, and proceeded to Guaymas to cross the Gulf of California to Loreto. It would follow the Camino Real to San Gabriel, arriving in two groups on June 9 and July 14, 1781. The second contingent departed Alamos in April 1781 for the missions at the Yuma Crossing. When it arrived, Capitán Rivera sent the pobladores and married soldiers with their families on ahead under Lieutenant Ramón Lasso, while he remained at Yuma with the single and unaccompanied soldiers, to guard the livestock herd. The families and married soldiers arrived at Mission San Gabriel on August 18, 1781. However, Capitán Rivera and the unaccompanied soldados all perished during the Quechan uprising on July 17-19, 1781.
