At 3 AM on March 26, 1916 a fast-moving and deadly fire swept thru the all-wood three-story San Antonio Country Club House, burning it to the ground. Killed were six persons; five guests and one employee. The guests who perished were Mrs. Maco Stewart, Judge James Edward Webb Sr., Mr. & Mrs. James Dubose Walthall, and Mr. Homer Jones. Mrs. Ellen Cockrell was the employee who perished.
