History of Highland Cemetery The first person buried in Highland cemetery was Mr. Jacob Scoffield, who had resided in Okemah only a short time. His death occured on May 15, 1904. Mr. A. B. Allen and the late Judge W.J. Lawrence located a strip of unallotted land and helped open the first grave. Prior to this time burials were made a Morse and Rock Creek cemetery. Prior to July, 1927, no record was kept of persons buried in cemetery. Only 60 graves remain unidentified (in 1940).
